VISA Rules and Obligations


Study In Canada

The international student can only get a Canada student visa if they are enrolled in a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). DLIs are schools or universities which are approved by the provincial or territorial government to allow them to host international students. However, there are many universities and educational institutions in Canada that are not certified by DLIs, the prospective immigrant student MUST NOT apply to those, even if they got acceptance since they will not be allowed to attend.


The student visa is the same as the Canada Visitor Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), but the student also needs a study permit. So, the Canada student visa is a combination of either a visitor visa and a study permit or an eTA and a study permit. The visitor visa application and student permit fees will be $100 and $150 respectively.


There are some prerequisites and conditions that an international student must follow to avail Canada student visa and study permit. The student needs to furnish a valid acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) with enclosed information on the degree, duration of the course and tuition fees to be paid. The student also needs to submit a police clearance certificate and copies of their current immigration status. The immigrant student must fill and sign a Visa Application Center (VAC) Consent Form. To qualify for a Canada student visa, the student needs to prove the intended temporary stay in Canada and that the student will return to the home country after completion of the course/studies.


After qualifying these mentioned prerequisites, the student needs to submit supporting documents mentioned as a declaration letter from the student to the Government of Canada to explain convincingly why they should issue you a student visa and study permit. Also, the letter from the court and police needs to be furbished to testify to the clear criminal record. An international student must submit proof to show having enough money to cover the expenses (tuition fees and living costs) to sustain their stay throughout the study tenure in Canada. The student can submit either one of the following documents: proof of a Canadian bank account that is in the student’s name, proof of a student loan from the bank, bank statements for at least the past 4 months, proof of a scholarship undertaken or proof that student has already paid tuition and housing fees.


The minimal financial requirements for a Canada study visa are of two types: Student studying outside Quebec needs to have $10,000 (per year inclusive of tuition fees) or $833 (monthly inclusive of tuition fees) and students studying in Quebec needs to have $11,000 (per year inclusive of tuition fees) or $917 (monthly inclusive of tuition fees).


The immigrant student also needs to abide by the general laid-ground rules of Canada universities which are to maintain a minimum of 80% of attendance, should pay tuition fees by the census date of each term and student have to score an aggregate of 50% in each semester. The students are allowed to work part-time up to 20 hours per week. The immigrant student should notify the university within 7 days of reaching in Canada and within 7 days if any change in the residential address. The immigrant student will not be allowed to transfer to another university before completing 6 months. The student also expected to maintain their OSHC throughout the duration of the student visa.

Postdoctoral students are offered ₹21,22,993/year and Doctoral students are offered ₹15,16,269/year. Canada – ASEAN SEED for the member states of the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN), with short-term exchange opportunities for study or research in Canadian post-secondary institutions at the college, undergraduate and graduate levels. Amount Awarded, ₹6,06,392 for cost of program ₹3,03,327.80 for flight, visa, health insurance ₹97,064.90 weekly allowance


The non-government organizations offer scholarships in Canada for Indian students if they are willing to pursue a specific course. They cover tuition, travel, health insurance, lodging costs, and monthly allowances. Canada Memorial Scholarship is one of the fully funded scholarships for Indian students applying for courses of more than one year may be required to offer declarations that they have sources of extra funding available to them that will enable them to complete the course. Amount Awarded, ₹10,32,157. Anne Vallee Ecological Fund is offered to students registered in Quebec or University of British Columbia in animal research at the master or doctoral level.
